Compound AI System

A compound AI system is an architecture that combines multiple components — models, retrieval, tools, and structured knowledge — into one coordinated system, rather than relying on a single language model to handle every task.

A single model has limits. It cannot recall precise facts, act on live data, or guarantee grounding. A compound system addresses this by assembling parts, each doing what it does best. Retrieval brings in the right knowledge. Tools take action. A structured model keeps reasoning correct. The language model orchestrates.

This design is now the standard shape of serious enterprise AI. It is more accurate, more controllable, and easier to audit than a lone model, because each component's contribution can be inspected.

The whole is stronger, and more accountable, than any single part.
