The UNITE ambidextrous org-chart

This ambidextrous org-chart demonstrates how an organization might organize around the 3 Horizons of Growth, catering to both the existing core organization, but also focusing on innovation and transformation.

The package

What the download contains

  1. The organizational response to the 3 Horizons of Growth
  2. A clear recommendation for how to separate the H3 environment from the H1 business
  3. The high-level blueprint for any organization that wants to lead innovation and transformation successfully

The case

Why we use it

The tools and processes of a Horizon 1 business do not work in an innovation or transformation context because the goals, approaches, mindset and culture are all drastically different. Thus, the only way to succeed is to structurally differentiate between the 3 Horizons of Growth.

The mechanics

How It Works

This org-chart presents a proven way of differentiating across the 3 Horizons of Growth. Although the innovation (H3) team still reports to the CEO and Board of Directors, they are isolated from the politics, metrics, and standard operating procedures of the main business. The innovation unit is often led by a Chief New Business Officer, an individual who serves to bridge the gap between the innovation team and the rest of the business, isolating them from Horizon 1 while at the same time ensuring that the team gets the resources they need. Horizon 2 transformation efforts are done jointly between the core business and the innovation unit.

The purpose

What is the goal of the model?

Be successful across all 3 Horizons of Growth: Just as you don’t want the innovation team to have to follow the rules and procedures of the Horizon 1 business, the approaches that work for innovation will not be successful for running your day-to-day business. Understanding what approaches are best suited to what horizons and having the setup required for each of them will enable success.

Richard Cobie, CEOReviewed on 15 July 2022

★★★★★Recommended as a purchase, worth the investment!

I completely re-evaluated the role of innovation in business growth: before reading this book I have to admit I thought it only entailed product new features and technologies enhancements, while now I see it has everything to do with meeting customer needs and uncovering a business USP, which automatically translates in sales! Could not recommend it more!

Unlike most business innovation books I read over the last years (and even decades) when reading How to create innovation you immediately understand the authors have been there, innovating and transforming some of the world’s most amazing brands. Great work!

Not only this book offers the most comprehensive innovation and business change overview but it really helps you take the next step, driving you step by step from theory to practice (also with super useful background notes and driving questions)

I really enjoyed the whole book, but mostly the culture chapter, mainly because I always failed to acknowledge its major role in favouring or inhibiting business growth. Loved the graphics that helped connect all the dots in a visually appealing (and way easier) way.

We’been willing to innovate our business for some years now, but then we always got stuck before we even started, because basically we had no idea where to start…This book helped us do just that: find the right starting point with guiding questions and an incredibly comprehensive innovation overview.
