The case

Why we use it

An innovation team works differently than a team in your Horizon 1 business. When you set up the team, you need to keep this in mind. Use the UNITE Innovation Team Structure to help you plan the hiring and onboarding of team members.

The mechanics

How It Works

The core team (in the center) should be committed full-time and have the freedom and space to execute. In addition to being full-time, they should be independent of the parent company, temporarily assigned, and have core digital competency. As we will discuss more fully in the culture chapter, individuals should be hired for mindest, not hard skills. The most important thing is that the team works well together and they are inspired by your purpose. The team should be led by an experienced entrepreneur rather than a project manager. This person is in charge of driving the innovation initiative towards success. They will lead the team rather than manage it. Scout for the team, interview them, test them. If you are staffing internally, they must nevertheless be on par with what you can get in the outside world. Do not let someone else put members on your team. Mediocrity does not equal success.

The purpose

What is the goal of the model?

Independence and entrepreneurial spirit. Your team should be independent from the parent company, empowered to act and animated by the spirit of innovation. The team culture necessary for innovation starts from day one. Plan accordingly.

Beyond the download

Use this model in Axibra, not only in a slide deck

The PDF is yours to keep. But a model changes something only when it touches the work — and that is what Axibra does with it. The model becomes the structure your decisions are made in, and every outcome stays traceable back to the input it came from.

In practice

Where this model does its work

For years we applied this model by hand, in client engagements. It now runs inside Axibra.

Innovation

Axibra helps organizations grow their innovation capability — across the whole company, not in one team.

See how it works

Digital transformation

Axibra closes the infamous gap between strategy and execution, and carries a transformation through to delivery.

See how it works

Culture and organization

Culture is the first reason transformations fail. Axibra keeps the organizational side of a decision in view instead of leaving it to chance.

See how it works

Thousands of organizations leverage the UNITE models — these are some of them …

Need help putting this to work in your organization?

Axibra is where these models run. It carries a decision through to the work that follows it, and keeps every result traceable back to the input it came from. If you would rather start with a conversation, we are one call away.

Strategy does not fail in the thinking. It fails in the handover.
