The case

Why we use it

Scaling your business requires achieving minimum competency in three key areas: Customer Intimacy, Product Leadership, and Operational Excellence. But to become a market leader, you have to achieve excellence in at least one. The Value Disciplines Triangle helps you choose which of the three areas you want to focus on.

The mechanics

How It Works

The Value Disciplines Triangle, which builds on Porter’s Generic Strategies, shows us the three areas of value and breaks down the attributes of each one. As you are scaling your business and beginning to execute and optimize your operating model, you should choose just one area to focus on. This is because you won’t have the resources to achieve excellence in more than one category. Further, you want to be clear about what sets your company apart from your customer’s perspective. The Value Disciplines help you create real customer focus since they put your relationship to the customer (are you the best, the cheapest, or the most tailored?) in the center of your overall strategy. Based on your chosen Value Discipline, you will have to adjust your Operating Model to be entirely consistent with it.

The purpose

What is the goal of the model?

Focusing your growth. As you build and scale in stage 4, you’ll need to focus on achieving excellence in one of the three domains. This choice may already be built into your Business Model. If not, make sure that you determine how you want to differentiate as to align your Operating Model and Business Model to that discipline.

Beyond the download

Use this model in Axibra, not only in a slide deck

The PDF is yours to keep. But a model changes something only when it touches the work — and that is what Axibra does with it. The model becomes the structure your decisions are made in, and every outcome stays traceable back to the input it came from.

In practice

Where this model does its work

For years we applied this model by hand, in client engagements. It now runs inside Axibra.

Innovation

Axibra helps organizations grow their innovation capability — across the whole company, not in one team.

See how it works

Customer experience

Axibra helps you understand your customers better and design products and services people actually want to use.

See how it works

Digital transformation

Axibra closes the infamous gap between strategy and execution, and carries a transformation through to delivery.

See how it works

Culture and organization

Culture is the first reason transformations fail. Axibra keeps the organizational side of a decision in view instead of leaving it to chance.

See how it works

Thousands of organizations leverage the UNITE models — these are some of them …

Need help putting this to work in your organization?

Axibra is where these models run. It carries a decision through to the work that follows it, and keeps every result traceable back to the input it came from. If you would rather start with a conversation, we are one call away.

Strategy does not fail in the thinking. It fails in the handover.
